Laundry Rules!

by Team Oyeniyi

So I got up this morning to find the laundry just awash with dirty clothes.  As Miss O 1 said, just dumped in there waiting for the servants!  Given neither of us are servants, while we were out shopping today we decided to establish some ORDER in our laundry!

A trip to Bunnings provided two laundry bins/baskets/buckets.

I did type up some lovely signs:

We found a cigarette lighter in the washing machine today.  Where we washing Mr O’s work clothes?  Yes we were!

In the end, I just went with the handwritten rules.  I couldn’t find the sticky tape!

We also invested in a NEW iron and ironing board. The old iron was literally falling apart. This laundry is big enough for us to leave the ironing board up for that last minute pressing!

I tried to get the water out of the dishwasher tonight – I am worried about it stagnating – but it doesn’t drain and it leaked all over the kitchen floor again. I don’t think anyone has used this dishwasher for YEARS quite some time. I also think the leaking has damaged the floor in the kitchen, as I can see a gap developing between the cupboards and the floor.

We bought scales today – the weigh the human body type, not the weigh the baking ingredients type.  As I type this line I am eating a little ice-cream.  I think this is not good.

What laundry battles do you face in your house and what rules do you have in place?

Thankfully I only have to do laundry for myself ;) No luck on the giving up smoking for Mr O? what about yourself?

We are still trying, Helen. Just the stress of moving was a bit of a set back. We will get there.

Oh the struggles! I like your laundry rules and might have to do same in my household. ;-)

Unbelievably difficult trying to get common sense happening, isn’t it?

I just watched YOURS, MINE, and OURS (starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda). In it, a widower with 10 kids married a widow with 8 kids.

Watching them do the laundry and cook breakfast made my life seem easy breezy.

 I have to get that movie! We only have 4, not eighteen. Even so, Miss O 2 is running around complaining she can’t find her uniform trousers this morning, despite the fact SHE folds the clean washing AND I told ALL the kids to check they had uniform pieces LAST NIGHT!

I haven´t always followed those rules Robyn, as recently as 2 weeks ago when I hung the wash there was tissue paper all over the clothes from a tissue left in my pajama pants!! Terrible thing having to brush all those scraps out and then rewashing it all again!

Tissues are the WORST! Especially against black or dark clothes! PJs are not quite so bad given you don’t wear them out of the house!

    Nice one!
But if you are leaving the ironing board up…you need a sign
“Have you switched off the iron?”

I bought one that automatically switches itself off. :D

Yay! I wish I had one of those. THe times we have left home and I’ve thought in panic”Did I switch the iron off?”

      • Aug 12 2012

I used to – no more!

Scary isan’t it? Especially when you are halfway to the airport for a 2 week holiday. My daughter’s hubby did actually leave the iron on once while they were away. Got a bill for over €1500 euros electric.

It’s pretty simple with us; then again, it’s just the two of us. We both empty the pockets and separate clothes by colors, and I check out the pockets before I do the laundry again, just in case. It’s not rules, exactly; it’s just that the things work fine that way, so that’s how we do it.

I think it just being the two of you is the secret there! Also, when/if you have children, you can “train” them from the start! We are trying to “re-educate”. It is like trying to shut to gate after the horse has bolted!
