What WILL the kids do?
Moving can pose some interesting situations.
Yesterday I organised the moving of the phone, internet connection and Foxtel. The Telstra Customer Service staff member was lovely and while the whole thing took 35 minutes to organise, it was a pleasure. Thank you Telstra!
The downside (or is it), as I described to Mr O in a text message:
We will be without internet for four business days and Foxtel will be moved Monday. What WILL the kids do!! LOL
His response, in double-quick time:
They will have to read!!!
I’m not at all sure how the kids will cope. NO INTERNET for six whole days once we include the weekend! At least, without Foxtel, I will not have to watch yet another replay and analysis of Australia coming fourth in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. OK, they didn’t win: get over it, Australia, there are a whole lot of other things happening at the Olympics.
The kids are still coming to grips with the finer points of technology, but they figured out this probably meant no internet on their phones either (no wi-fi)! Mr O Jnr 2 piped up with the information they could – if they had credit on their phones. Wise young man, that one. My IT protégé!
I am collecting more boxes on the way to work tomorrow morning and have already packed my beloved dinner set. The house looks like a bomb has hit it and Mr O Jnr 1 came home from visiting a friend raving about how lovely his friend’s house was. Yes, well, I countered, I am sure his friend KEEPS HIS ROOM TIDY!!!!
I have a feeling Mr O and I will be exhausted this time in a few days.

Anyone for a book? I spent my childhood hiding in books. They kept me sane and saved my soul!
I did too – I lived on a farm miles from anywhere with no TV, computers or electronic games. We read books and rode horses!
What did we do before the internet? I don’t even remember
We read books and newspapers and we spoke to people on the PHONE!
Oh yea the phone forgot about that
I hate moving…grrrrrrrrrr
Kids and internet…another grrrrrrrrr
Mine arrive here for a visit and in goes the password and they are glued to their phones…drives me mental. Then i end up sounding like my Dad. ‘Back in my day we played outside.’
Trust me, I know that feeling re the internet. Plugged in 24/7 they would be if they could be!
Let them pack boxes.
I’ll be happy if they just get their bedrooms tidy and neat! In the new house!
My kids wouldn’t be happy … but I can’t think of a better thing for kids than to have a break from technology! Reading, talking, singing songs … lots of stuff can happen with no connection.
Of course, I think I’d have major anxiety about all I was missing!
I remember back to my childhood. We didn’t even have TV. I rode my horse, tracked the cat to see where she had had her kittens, helped Dad deliver lambs. Totally different life altogether.
Probably why I don’t care too much for TV these days!
I honestly think that parents need to unwire themselves their kids from time to time because I see the benefits that come from doing so. Every summer our friends and their kids arrive here and take a digital vacation. The month of August is their family bonding month and electronics are not allowed. It’s always the best month of the year weatherwise so they are on the beaches and trails and bike riding, hiking, etc. I’m eagerly waiting their arrival. We have so much to catch up on.
Agree 100%. We try to ensdure there are no screens (TV, computer, tablets) for an hour before bed. I know this is good sleep hygiene. Our aim is not always that successful, but we try.
I think picking one day a week would be a good idea, but I love your friends’ idea of a month without digital “stuff” in their lives.
How did we ever cope without internet before? Yes, maybe some reading will be good for the kids, even I don´t do as much reading as I did before I got addicted to facebook, blogs, pinterest, etc, etc! Good luck with the move xx
Thank you Sami. I am expecting to be exhausted! The kids should have pristine rooms!!
Only 4 working days!! tell the kids it took 6 WEEKS to get mine going when I moved to this house… agonising..
SIX WEEKS!!!! That is amazing! We just have to wait until they switch some codes in the exchange or something that is a little too technical for me to understand.
How did you blog with no internet?
I wasn’t blogging then and wasn’t even on Facebook so it wasn’t so difficult really. you’ve just made me realise how addicted I am now !!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh –
“Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end…..”
