Open Letter to the bad guys

by Team Oyeniyi

I woke today to find this search term had found us: “successful sham marriage appeals”.  This did not make me at all happy.  Was this, I wondered, a sham participant seeking tips and tricks or was it a journalist looking for material to write yet another unsubstantiated emotive “expose”? Edit:  Another search engine term, same day ”lying to diac”  – they both annoyed me.

If it were the former, this is for YOU!

Dear Sham Marriage Participant,

Welcome to my world of madness.  It is cases like yours that make cases like ours so hard.  Please read through our history here: see the pain and anguish your duplicity and lies indirectly contribute to.  The extra expenses, the sorrow, the anxiety.  It is trying to catch people like you that makes Immigration Decision Makers so suspicious of the motives of us all, even though it seems you only make up 0.057% of applicants.

It is cases like yours that lead to newspaper articles such as that analysed in my Emotive Reporting entry, leading to the general public thinking everyone is like YOU.  We are not.

To you I say this: take your selfishness elsewhere.  You want a visa, find a visa class you can legitimately apply for, do not give the rest of us a bad name.  I know you are in the minority: a tiny percentage - the problem is you make good media stories and, apparently, good movie plots.

Yours sincerely

A Real Marriage

i am Georgeos, an Australian who almost never been to australia
I carry most of my life in Spain
married a Spanish girl from last summer, I finished my engineering studies last year and with the theme of the crisis in Europe have not found anything to work and thought about returning to live in Australia but I’ve hit a wall visa partner called
I took a month reading a lot of things and I’m tired to the point that I planted to stay in Spain
is that what they want is crazy
want you to page 2200 eur only applying for visas but you have to pay for TRANSLATION of documents and analysis of medical
    about 3000 euro in total
is insane, a person with 24 years and recently completed studies and can afford that?
I can barely afford the plane that are another 3000 euro for the two

    I also require guarantees good
I keep my wife at least two years,
warranty if they mean that from the first day in Australia begin to look for work
to help her settle in, in that I forget that I’m an engineer at the beginning and start looking any job that comes ma to find work in the mine and I do not use drugs and respect the law
for if I can guarantee that

but if they want to take me a million dollars to Austarlia
      I can not guarantee that
I wrote it just good to share with you all
    regards

Hi Georgeos, I am very sorry to hear of your plight but it is a seemingly common enough situation.

Please come back and let us know how you go. I hope you manage to come home with your wife.

(I am using this weekend to catch up on my blog reading which is why I’m commenting on older stuff.)

I agree strongly with what you say in your letter. If people didn’t do/try to do sham marriages then maybe my husband would have been allowed to marry me in England like we’d planned. They refused his visa – didn’t believe our relationship was real, thought he was just using me to get entry to the UK – so I came back to Brazil and we got married here instead. It was ridiculous, his family, kids, job are all here. Why did they think he was trying to sneek into the UK? I have to assume it’s because of our age difference. Very shallow thinking from the immigration dept. in that case. My family still haven’t met him in person – thanks a bunch sham marriagers!

Exactly my point. I am so sorry for your experience too. It is horrible for those of us who just want to be together. Thanks for sharing your experience here.

Never mind about commenting on older stuff – I get that quite a bit, given the nature of this site. Readers often go to much earlier posts than this one. :D

    Well said!

Search engine terms can be so strange. I have things show up that make no sense at all.

They only make up a miniscule %, these sham marriages, but they get the media coverage and the movies, hence people think they are everywhere. Even my psychologist says they are a miniscule % and he works in the field all the time. So I was very pleased to be able to quantify that with the analysis of the statistics!

Not too far away at all, I hope and trust! As he and I say, we are now so close, we can smell the visa. The rest of what we say is not publishable! Hehehehe (Celibacy is not something either of us cope with well)

    Well said TO…

It’s amazing though when you study the search terms…how people find your blog.

One of mine was “piglet being sick down toilet” I alaughed out loud because I thought it funny, but in your case I can imagine the way they found your blog was extremely hurtful.

        Hi TO,
What was really SPOOKY…and I mean REALLY spooky… and I’m not jesting here – I had a stomach bug at the time. I just stared at the screen in disbelief!…it was as though big brother was watching me.

Sorry you have stomach bug. I hope it wasn’t the clams!

I have to ask – did you mean this comment to go on Annus Horribilis? It seems to have more of a connection to that than my letter to the bad guys?

You were nicer than you had to be. Screw them.

The reality is there are so few of them! I blame the damn journalists and Hollywood more – they are the ones that spread the hype! But yes, I agree – screw them. I updated my reference page to include a link back to this.

I probably over-reacted to the search engine thing, but it just made me angry after all we have been through. If it was a journalist, I’d like to throttle him/her!

…it just goes to show how stupid search terms are….in my case it was amusing…but in yours it was extremely hurtful. I think the letter you wrote was great and I hope who ever was searching returns, reads it and takes note!

I think very few of us can even begin to imagine the anguish your family is going through right now. I pray to God that one day you are reunited and you can be a family once more.

OH – I get it! The search term YOU got at the time! Sorry PiP – one of the problems of my situation is short-term memory loss! So I didn’t connect your comment with the search term you got. Now I can’t find it, I was going to include it in this comment. YES! I see totally now how your comment related! That search term was very funny and I can certainly imagine that with a you having a stomach bug at the time you would have found it very spooky!

You have brought a smile to my face this morning!

Thanks for your kind words, PiP.
